2025Paper, Wood, ClothThis piece was curated for my EFS Design final at RISD. The assignment required students to construct a book or pamphlet that would look into a specific theme of choice. For this book, I decided to focus primarily on Chinese opera as it held a deep connection to my cultural roots growing up in Beijing.
Chinese opera is a form of storytelling through music, martial arts, and singing. Whether it is a love story between a snake spirit and a man, or political drama of a female son-in-law, Chinese opera is a versatile range of styles and stories depending on the province. This book introduces 5 main operas: Beijing, Sichuan, Huangmei, Yue, and Nuo opera.
Each panel features an iconic story representing each region presented through a traditional Chinese paper-cut style, much like the ones found in Orbiting the Gods. As the viewer reveals each page, the contents of the panels cast a shadow on the surface, revealing the picture.
